What is Botox?

Botox is a treatment for the facial lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle movements.

How does it work?

Botox works by relaxing the muscles situated immediately below the skin surface, thereby creating a smoother more relaxed and younger appearance.

How long does the treatment take?

Following a consultation, treatments typically take about15 minutes.  Since there is no recovery time, you can receive your Botox treatment and return back to your daily activities immediately.  Often, people are treated during their lunch hour and return to work.

How long does it take to see the effects of the treatment?

Results begin to be noticed in 3-5 days. Some patients experience maximum results in 2 weeks.

How does the treatment take place?

Using ultrafine syringe (an insulin syringe) small quantities are injected in the desired site. Treatment is essentially painless with most patients describing it as a very small pinch.

How long do the effects of Botox last and are the results permanent?

These vary from patient to patient with most results lasting 3-6 months.  Continued, regularly scheduled appointments can help the effects last longer for a more healthy and youthful appearance.  Results are not permanent.

Is treatment safe?

Absolutely! Botox therapy has been used for over 20 years for a number of medical conditions. Children with cerebral palsy and as young as two, receive doses ten times higher than those given for cosmetic reasons. Botox is a medication used under strict medical supervision. It is approved for esthetic use by Health Canada and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Is Botox a poison?

Botox is a derivative of a purified protein that comes from a naturally occurring bacteria.  This protein is modified during pharmacologic processing and is safe to use in specified dosing.

Will my face look worse when the effects wear-off?

Botox cosmetic will never result in worsening or progression of lines and wrinkles even after the effect has worn-off.  Botox serves to slow down or even stop the aging process. Once the effects have worn-off natural processes resume.

What are the secondary effects?

Secondary effects are rare and not permanent.  They typically consist of minor headaches and a small bruise that is easily covered with make-up.  The overwhelming majority of patients have no side effects at all.

I have heard that it is possible to have a droopy eyelid, is that true?

This is a very rare complication that occurs in less than one percent of all patients.  It is not permanent and can be easily managed with the use of eye drops.

Can I receive Botox if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

No studies have been conducted outlining the effect of Botox on pregnancy.

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a colorless gel used to restore facial volume.  It is made of a compound called hyaluronic acid and is manufactured by Allergan, the same company that produces Botox.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar complex found in a variety of tissues throughout the body.  Together with collagen and elastin it is responsible for the firmness and buoyancy of the skin.

How does Juvederm work?

Juvederm is injected just below the skin surface in order to help fill lines, wrinkles and lessen the effects of aging.

How is Juvederm distinguished from other esthetic agents available?

Treatments vary from patient to patient and typically last less than thirty minutes with a consultation prior to treatment.

Are treatments with Juvederm painful?

Juvederm is administered just below the skin with an ultrafine needle that minimizes any pain.  Local anesthesia in the form of a topical cream may also be used.  The supple texture of the gel itself further minimizes any discomfort.

Juvederm is a completely safe product that has been extensively tested and approved by Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration.

Is allergy testing required?

What are the side effects of treatment?

Side effects are minimal and infrequent and typically include minimal redness or local tenderness. Small bruising may also occur. Side effects are temporary and often disappear in less than one week.

Is there a recuperation time required after injection with Juvederm?

There is no recovery time required after treatment. Results are instant and patients can return to their daily activities immediately. Patients are often treated at lunch time and return to work immediately.

You can have treatments with Juvederm if you have had Botox.  The two treatments are complimentary and often serve to enhance one another.
